As international code of signals, signal flags can be used for communication from one vessel to another while at sea. Signal flags have alpha-numeric correspondence and can be used to spell out messages. But, mariners usually fly nautical signal flags in combinations which correspond to particular messages. Most boaters string signal flags direction. Signal flags are also used to dress ships for ceremonial and festive occasions by stringing all end-to-end and and hang them from the rigging in bow-to-stern. The occasions are such as the beginning of the boating season, or any maritime celebrations. The International Code of Signals has been in service since 1857 It was first published by the British Board of Trade. It was revised in 1932 in seven languages: English, French German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Norweigan. And it was revised again in 1969 to add Russian and Greek to the list.
