Georgia State Flag History

The latest version of Georgia flag was adopted in 2003. From 1956 to 2001, the Georgia state flag incorporated the Confederate battle flag. That flag was designed by John Sammons Bell and approved by the Georgia General Assembly. In year 2000, the state reviewed the flag design for replacement. Due to the reason that it had been adopted during an “atmosphere of preserving segregation and resentment.” In year 2001, Governor Roy Barnes suggested a replacement flag through the General Assembly. The new flag included  small symbols of several of the state’s past flags. But  in 2002, Sonny Perdue was elected governor and he suggested a new flag. The current flag is in use since 2003.
