Virginia state flag was adopted in 1950. The state flag of the Commonwealth of Virginia is made of the state seal against a blue background. The first flag was originally adopted in 1861 right before the Civil War. Later it was officially adopted as the Virginia state flag by the General Assembly in 1950. The seal on the flag was designed in 1776 after Virginia’s declaration of independence from Great Britain.
